Something happened this past week in Holliston that hasn't happened there in more than 20 years. While unusual, it would also seem at first glance to be something that only someone in Holliston, if anyone, would take notice of.

But first glances can be deceiving. What happened in Holliston helps answer a question that repeats itself with frustrating frequency in cities and towns across America: Why do fewer and fewer people want to become involved in government?

Ask Elizabeth Theiler (pronounced "Ty-ler"). She got involved. She ran for local office, was elected, and no one has ever questioned her commitment, competency and dedication. She walked into a meeting Monday night as chairwoman of Holliston's Board of Health. She walked out an ex-chairwoman. And she is still trying to make sense of what happened.

The meeting had been called by the town's Board of Selectmen to discuss issues related to the town's Casella waste transfer station. All towns have ongoing, complex and divisive issues, and this has been one of Holliston's.

Theiler has been an outspoken critic of Casella, and of their efforts to expand their operations in Holliston. As the Monday night meeting began, Board of Health member Anita Ballesteros moved that fellow board member Richard Maccagnano immediately replace Theiler as chairman.
